There’s a sense of lightness that comes with spring cleaning. Where do you start? Pull everything out, just like you would if you were going to take stock of your freezer or closet. You need to see what you’re working with so it is imperative to see it all. Hit the medicine cabinet, drawers, makeup bags, travel bags and vanity – literally anywhere that you might have stashed your skincare products and makeup. By placing it all in one spot like a table will make it possible to get the big picture.
First step is to purge the products that are past their prime. This isn’t always the easiest thing to do with skincare products. Many items will have a period after opening or PAO timeline or date that is contained on the packaging, which will help. This will let you know how long a product has stayed active based on lab testing. Generally, this information is on the box the product came in probably long gone.
Without the expiration date, check how the product smells or looks. If the odor or color has changed, the product has oxidized which means the ingredients are less effective and are becoming unstable. If that is the case, toss it. Haven’t used a product in over a year? That should hit the trash can, too since you most likely aren’t going to try it out now.
Pro tip: When you buy a new product, look for the PAO date on the box and make a note on the bottom of the bottle or jar with a black Sharpie.
Getting rid of old products and making it easy to find the products you’ll use daily will motivate you to stick to your skincare routine. When your products are organized and easy to access, using them is more fun and you’ll be able to get out the door in the morning faster.
